On gas ranges, bad science, and the sad state of science journalism (Paid Subscriber Exclusive)
Social media broke earlier this week when it was announced that the latest target for the government’s ire wasn’t inflation, shady economic practices in the crypto space, or the fact that our nation’s air system was effectively shut down because of faulty software.
Oh no, the problems in our nation are because some people like to use gas ranges to cook on.
Citing a plethora of studies, officials announced an intention to ban gas ranges, forcing everyone to use electric stoves. After all, gas ranges cause all kinds of health problems, including childhood asthma.
Only, there are problems with this pronouncement. It’s utter nonsense.
And it’s a problem that deals with gas ranges themselves, but also how bad studies get propagated and how science journalism is just lacking in this country.
