My theory as to why the young people embrace socialism is that they have grown up being given everything and that's what they see socialism as: freebies...

I ask my students if they think tuition, healthcare, etc should be free. If they say yes I ask if they will live with their parents after graduation. When they say no I ask why not. They say they want their independence, to make their own decisions. I say but living with your parents would be FREE! They often get my point. If they don’t I discuss distribution of GPA. A student with a 4.0 should be taxed .8 and be a have a 3.2, and a student with a 2.0 would then have a 2.8. This would be “fair,” right. Some of the lesser students smirk and nod. Then I ask, how long before the 4.0 students stop trying because they have no incentive to achieve anything better than a 3.2? Then there’s less GPA to go around? And if GPA is distributed regardless of earning, would it even matter to employers? This results in silence. Socialism is a fantasy of the emotional, unthinking and ignorant of history. It needs to be explained in their terms.
