If you didn't already believe identity politics had gone full stupid, this should convince you
I’m not a fan of identity politics, particularly when you’re talking about acting.
Oh, I don’t have an issue with someone having a problem with John Wayne playing Ghengis Khan—that was really some stupid casting, even if it was normal for the time—but I do get annoyed when people think that only gay actors should play gay roles, for example.
The truth is, it’s called acting. While a white guy can’t play a black dude due to the obvious physical differences—and no, Robert Downey, Jr. didn’t actually try in Tropic Thunder—things like demanding disabled actors play disabled characters or other stupidity is bad.
Well, it’s gotten worse.
