Human achievement doesn’t just happen. People rarely just stumble into greatness. Einstein didn’t see the Theory of Relativity in his bowl of alphabet soup. Hemingway didn’t just accidentally bang out amazing works by bashing his head into the keys of a typewriter.
No, people have to work at things. They have to struggle, to strive, and they need metrics of some kind to determine if you’re already good or if you’re improving.
That’s why we have grades in school. They’re that kind of metric, which is why it’s awesome to see someone bring an “F” up to an “A.”
Unfortunately, a new trend in “education” seeks to do away with all of that.
