The Bill of Rights exists for a reason. Our Founding Fathers knew that while they couldn’t protect every right a person has, they needed to protect certain rights so as to keep tyranny at bay.
One of those is the freedom of religion, specifically phrased in the First Amendment as, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof[.]”
The free exercise of religion, like many other rights, isn’t absolute. It cannot be used to justify the infringement of another’s rights, which is why human sacrifice isn’t permissible by anyone.
But what about a candle?
My wife loves them for non-religious reasons. In fact, her buying of them got so bad I used to joke that she had more than the Catholic Church.
And now a candle is at the center of a controversy.
