World War II was a dark time in American history. While it’s often looked at in hindsight as an almost beautiful moment—a time when the nation rallied together in an effort to defeat the forces of evil, with people from all walks of life and all ages pulling together—the reality is that it was a time of deep authoritarianism.
Sure, one could make the case that things like rationing were vital to the war effort, but there was a lot more going on than just that.
